Watch out for
The numbers children get backwards
Letters are not the only things that flip. These are the numbers that go wrong most, and the one line to say while the child traces.
-
both bumps face the same way
A backwards 3 is common at 4 and 5. Say "round to the right, round to the right" as the pencil moves.
-
hat last
Five's top line is its hat. Draw the body first, then put the hat on. The belly should be bigger than the top.
-
six and nine are not the same
Six starts at the top and its loop is at the bottom. Say "down, then round" for 6 and "round, then down" for 9.
-
round, then down
Nine is a circle with a stick, like the letter q without the flick. Draw the circle first every time.
- The same thing happens with 6 letters. See the letters children reverse.
Questions
Before you print
- What age are number tracing worksheets for?
- About 3 to 6. Most children can trace 1, 7 and 0 at 3 or 4 and the curvy numbers (2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9) by 5. Use the same sheet more than once: trace first, then copy into the empty cells.
- Which numbers do children write backwards?
- 3, 5 and 7 are reversed most, because they start on the left and curve or slide to the right. 6 and 9 get swapped. Each sheet shows the start dot and numbered strokes so the movement is right from the first go.
- Is 4 really two strokes?
- Yes. 4 and 5 are the only numbers where the pencil lifts. The other 8 are one movement each, which is why tracing works so well for them.
- Do these match the letter tracing sheets?
- Same layout: a stroke box at the top, 5 rows of pale numbers to trace, the first one solid, and a counting box at the bottom. Children who have used the letter sheets know what to do.
