By letter

Handwriting practice for one letter at a time

Every letter has its own page with 3 free sheets, how to form the capital and the small letter, and the common mistakes for that letter.

The 6 letters children reverse most (b, d, g, p, q and S) have their own page with all the downloads.

How to use them

Handwriting practice in 5 short rules

Enough to get started. The letter formation guide has the longer version: stroke order, letter families and common mistakes. Grip has its own page.

  1. Start with tracing, not copying

Tracing over a pale letter teaches the movement before the child has to remember the shape. The letter tracing sheets show numbered stroke order and a start dot on every letter.

  2. Lowercase first, capitals for names

Most of what children read and write is lowercase, so most UK schools teach it first. Add capitals when a child wants to write their own name.

  3. Short and often beats long and rare

One sheet, 5 to 10 minutes, most days. A tired hand produces backwards letters, so stop while it is going well.

  4. Move to lined paper when the letters are steady

When a child can trace a letter and copy it twice without help, switch to blank handwriting paper. Wide lines first, then medium, then narrow.

  5. Watch b, d, g, p, q and S

These 6 letters are the ones children reverse most. Each has its own page with the mistake, the fix and extra sheets.

  6. Read the letter formation guide Pencil grip

Questions

Before you print

What is on a handwriting practice sheet?
Lines. A top line, a dotted mid line and a base line, repeated down the page. The letter tracing sheets add a pale letter on each line to trace and a stroke-order diagram at the top. The blank paper has the lines only.
Which line size should I print?
Wide lines (7 rows per page) for ages 3 to 5 and first letters. Medium (10 rows) for ages 5 to 7, the same spacing as the tracing sheets. Narrow (14 rows) from about age 7, for words and sentences.
Are the sheets free for a classroom?
Yes. Print as many as you need for your class or home. Please do not sell them or upload them to another site; link here instead.
A4 or US Letter?
Both are included for every PDF. A4 in the UK, Europe and Australia; US Letter in the US and Canada. Use the toggle on this page and every download switches.

After the paper, keep the same strokes going on screen. Penny the Pencil shows the path, cheers the right start and catches a backwards letter before it becomes a habit.
