Most UK schools teach lowercase before capitals: lowercase makes up almost every word a child reads, and the 26 small letters share a handful of movements. Learn the c shape and a, d, g, o and q follow. Capitals come in for names.

a, b, c, d, e, g, h, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, u, v, w, y and z are each a single movement, so they make good first letters.

g, j, p, q and y go under the base line. The sheets leave room for the tail and the diagram shows how far down it goes.

b, d, g, p and q are the small letters children flip. Their own page has the fix for each.
One letter per sheet
Each sheet is one page: the small letter's stroke diagram at the top, then 5 rows of that letter to trace and copy. Click the sheet or the button to download; the letter name opens the full letter page.

The pair to watch
Make two fists with the thumbs up. The left hand makes a b and the right hand makes a d. "The b comes first, so its belly points forward." The bed trick works too: b-e-d looks like a bed with the posts on the outside. Children who start d with the stick are the ones who flip it. Start with the curve every time, then go up and down. "c, up, down" is the chant.
