How to form the letter O

Start at the top, go round anti-clockwise, close it

Capital O (one stroke)

  1. Start at the top

    Put the pencil on the green dot at the top of the circle.

  2. Go round to the left

    Anti-clockwise, down the left side and round the bottom.

  3. Close the circle

    Come up the right side and join where you started.

Lowercase o (one stroke)

  1. Start at the top, on the mid line

    The small o fits between the mid line and the base line.

  2. Go round to the left

    Anti-clockwise, the same way as c.

  3. Close the circle

    Join up exactly where you started.

On the sheet: O is for octopus. Say it out loud: "o-o-octopus". Can you think of two more O words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with O

  • Clockwise o

    Going right first is the habit that causes most problems with the other round letters. Start at the top and go left.

  • Circle that does not close

    Slow down for the last part and aim for the start dot.

  • Egg-shaped o

    Leaning ovals come from speed. Make the left and right sides match.
