One continuous stroke that changes direction twice. S is the most reversed letter in the alphabet, and the same shape in both cases. The sheet shows capital S (one stroke) and small s (one stroke) with a numbered start dot on each, then 5 rows of letters to trace.

How to form the letter S
One snake-shaped stroke, no pencil lifts
Capital S (one stroke)

Start just below the top line, on the right
Put the pencil on the green dot.

Curve up and around to the left
Make a little c shape across the top.

Slide down through the middle, then curve back
Cross the mid line heading right.

Sweep round to the bottom and stop on the left
Finish at the red arrow, just above the base line.
Lowercase s (one stroke)

Start just below the mid line, on the right
The small s fits between the mid line and the base line.

Curve up and around to the left
A tiny c across the top.

Slide down through the middle, then curve back
Heading right.

Sweep round to the bottom and stop on the left
Just above the base line.
On the sheet: S is for sun. Say it out loud: "Sssss" like a snake. Can you think of two more S words?
Common mistakes
What to watch for with S

Backwards S
Starting on the left makes the letter flip. Always start on the right.

Starting at the bottom
S begins near the top, like most letters. Point to the green dot first.

Two separate curves
S is one movement. Practise the motion in the air before touching paper.
