How to form the letter G

c first, close it, then hook under the line

Capital G (one stroke)

  1. Start near the top, on the right

Just under the top line, like a capital C.

  2. Curve anti-clockwise round the bottom

Keep going up the right-hand side to the middle.

  3. Draw the shelf

A short line pointing in towards the centre.

Lowercase g (one stroke)

  1. Start with a c

Just under the mid line on the right, curve anti-clockwise round.

  2. Go up to the mid line

    Close the circle.

  3. Straight down past the base line

Keep going into the space underneath.

  4. Hook to the left

Curve under and finish pointing left, like a monkey's tail.

On the sheet: G is for goat. Say it out loud: "g-g-goat". Can you think of two more G words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with G

  • Tail hooks the wrong way

The hook on g points left. A hook to the right is a reversed g. Finish under the circle.

  • g sits on the line

The circle sits on the base line and the tail hangs below it, like p, q, j and y.

  • Capital G without a shelf

The shelf is what makes a G a G. Finish with the small line pointing inwards.
