How to form the letter V

Down to the point, straight back up

Capital V (one stroke)

  1. Start at the top line, on the left

    Put the pencil on the green dot.

  2. Slant down to the point

    Touch the base line in the middle.

  3. Slant back up

    To the top line on the right. One stroke.

Lowercase v (one stroke)

  1. Start at the mid line, on the left

    The small v fits between the mid line and the base line.

  2. Slant down to the point

    Touch the base line.

  3. Slant back up

    To the mid line on the right.

On the sheet: V is for van. Say it out loud: "vvvv-van", like an engine. Can you think of two more V words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with V

  • Round bottom

    That is a u. The bottom of v is a sharp point. Stop, change direction, go.

  • Point above the line

    The point sits on the base line.

  • Two strokes

    v is one movement. Do not lift the pencil at the point.
