How to form the letter W

Down, up, down, up, all in one stroke

Capital W (one stroke)

  1. Start at the top line, on the left

    Put the pencil on the green dot.

  2. Down to the base line, up to the middle

    The first v, with the middle point lower than the top.

  3. Down to the base line, up to the top

    The second v. One stroke.

Lowercase w (one stroke)

  1. Start at the mid line, on the left

    Draw it like the capital, half the size.

  2. Down, up to the middle

    First v.

  3. Down, up to the mid line

    Second v. One stroke.

On the sheet: W is for web. Say it out loud: "w-w-web". Can you think of two more W words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with W

  • Rounded bottoms

    Those make it look like two u's. Each bottom is a sharp point on the base line.

  • Three v's

    w has exactly two points on the base line. Count them.

  • Lifting in the middle

    w is one movement from start to finish.
