How to form the letter X

Two slants that cross in the middle

Capital X (2 strokes)

  1. Start at the top line, on the left

    Slant down to the bottom right corner.

  2. Lift, start at the top right

    Slant down to the bottom left corner, crossing the first line in the middle.

Lowercase x (2 strokes)

  1. Start at the mid line, on the left

    Slant down to the base line on the right.

  2. Lift, start at the mid line on the right

    Slant down to the base line on the left, crossing in the middle.

On the sheet: X is for x-ray. Say it out loud: "ks", the sound at the end of box and fox. Can you think of two more words with an x?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with X

  • Second line from the bottom

    Both lines start at the top. Lift the pencil and go back up before the second one.

  • Cross too high or too low

    The lines cross halfway down.

  • Lines that do not cross

    Aim the second line at the middle of the first.
