Ladder letters: Start at the top and go straight down.

How to form the letter U

Down, round, up, then a stick on the lowercase

Capital U (one stroke)

  1. Start at the top line, on the left

    Put the pencil on the green dot.

  2. Straight down, then round the bottom

    Curve like the bottom of a cup.

  3. Straight up to the top line

    Stop. One stroke.

Lowercase u (one stroke)

  1. Start at the mid line, on the left

    Draw straight down, then round the bottom.

  2. Up to the mid line

    Come up the right side.

  3. Straight back down

    A short stick down to the base line. Stop.

On the sheet: U is for up. Say it out loud: "u-u-up". Can you think of two more U words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with U

  • Missing the final stick

    Lowercase u finishes with a short line down on the right.

  • Pointed bottom

    That is a v. The bottom of u is round. Slow down at the turn.

  • Starting on the right

    Both forms start on the left and go down first.
