How to form the letter A

Capital A is 3 straight strokes, lowercase a is 1 curve

Capital A (3 strokes)

  1. Start at the top point

    Slide down to the left and stop on the base line.

  2. Back to the top

    Slide down to the right and stop on the base line.

  3. Add the bar

    Draw a short line across the middle from left to right.

Lowercase a (one stroke)

  1. Start just under the mid line, on the right

    Put the pencil on the green dot.

  2. Curve round anti-clockwise

    Make a c shape that closes back where you started.

  3. Go up, then straight down

    Touch the mid line, then slide down to the base line and stop.

On the sheet: A is for apple. Say it out loud: "a-a-apple". Can you think of two more A words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with A

  • Floating tail on a

    Drawing the circle clockwise leaves a gap before the stick. Go anti-clockwise so the pencil arrives at the stick naturally.

  • Capital A with no point

    Both slanted lines should meet at the top. Start each one from the same dot.

  • Bar too high or too low

    The bar sits a little below the middle. Point to the mid line before drawing it.
