How to form the letter E

Capital E is a stick and 3 bars, lowercase e starts in the middle

Capital E (4 strokes)

  1. Start at the top, draw the stick

Straight down to the base line.

  2. Top bar

From the top of the stick, across to the right.

  3. Middle bar

A slightly shorter line across from the middle of the stick.

  4. Bottom bar

Along the base line, the same length as the top bar.

Lowercase e (one stroke)

  1. Start in the middle, on the left

Halfway between the mid line and the base line.

  2. Draw across to the right

    A short straight line.

  3. Curve up and over, anti-clockwise

Round the top, down the left side and round the bottom.

  4. Stop with a gap

Finish on the right, just above the base line.

On the sheet: E is for egg. Say it out loud: "e-e-egg". Can you think of two more E words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with E

  • Starting e like a c

Without the straight line first, the e has no eye. Start in the middle, draw the line, then curve.

  • Bars on the capital drift

All three bars start on the stick. Point to the stick before each one.

  • Middle bar too long

The middle bar is the shortest of the three.
