How to form the letter H

Down, back up, then over the arch

Capital H (3 strokes)

  1. Left stick

    From the top line straight down to the base line.

  2. Right stick

    The same again, a little way across.

  3. Join them

    A bar across the middle from left to right.

Lowercase h (one stroke)

  1. Start at the top line

    Draw a tall stick straight down to the base line.

  2. Go back up the stick

    Stop at the mid line.

  3. Over the arch and down

    Curve over to the right and come straight down to the base line.

On the sheet: H is for hat. Say it out loud: "h-h-hat", a breathy sound. Can you think of two more H words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with H

  • Lifting before the arch

    The lowercase h is one stroke. Retrace up the stick rather than lifting the pencil.

  • Arch too short

    The arch starts at the mid line, not near the bottom. Otherwise h looks like a b with a flat belly.

  • Capital bar too low

    The bar on H sits in the middle of the sticks.
