How to form the letter K

Stick first, then kick in and kick out

Capital K (3 strokes)

  1. Start at the top, draw the stick

    Straight down to the base line.

  2. Kick in

    From the top right, slant down to the middle of the stick.

  3. Kick out

    From the middle of that line, slant down to the bottom right.

Lowercase k (3 strokes)

  1. Start at the top line

    Draw a tall stick straight down to the base line.

  2. Kick in

    From the mid line on the right, slant down to the lower part of the stick.

  3. Kick out

    From the middle of that line, slant down to the base line on the right.

On the sheet: K is for kite. Say it out loud: "k-k-kite". Can you think of two more K words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with K

  • Kicks that miss the stick

    Both slanted lines must touch the stick. Aim for the same point.

  • Kick out too flat

    The lower line goes down to the base line, not sideways.

  • Lowercase k as tall as a capital

    The kicks on lowercase k start at the mid line, not the top.
