How to form the letter M

Down, up, over, down, up, over, down

Capital M (2 strokes)

  1. Start at the top, draw the stick

    Straight down to the base line on the left.

  2. Back to the top

    Slant down to the middle, then slant back up to the top right.

  3. Straight down

    From the top right to the base line.

Lowercase m (one stroke)

  1. Start at the mid line

    Draw a short stick down to the base line.

  2. Go back up and over the first arch

    Come down to the base line.

  3. Back up and over the second arch

    Come down to the base line and stop.

On the sheet: M is for moon. Say it out loud: "mmmm-moon", like something tasty. Can you think of two more M words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with M

  • Three arches

    m has exactly two. Count them.

  • Arches that do not touch the base line

    Each arch comes all the way down to the base line before the next one starts.

  • Capital M with a shallow middle

    The middle point of M comes well down, past the middle of the letter.
