Letter J Worksheet: Trace J and j with Stroke Order (Free PDF)

J is one of the ladder letters. A straight line that hooks left at the bottom. The lowercase j is the same but drops under the line and has a dot. Every row on the sheet starts with a solid letter to copy, followed by faint letters to trace.

Ladder letters: Start at the top and go straight down.

How to form the letter J

Straight down, hook left, dot last

Capital J (one stroke)

  1. Start at the top line

    A little to the right of centre.

  2. Straight down

    Go past the middle.

  3. Hook to the left

    Curve round the bottom and finish pointing up on the left.

Lowercase j (2 strokes)

  1. Start at the mid line

    Draw straight down, past the base line.

  2. Hook to the left

    Curve under the line and finish pointing left.

  3. Add the dot

    Above the line, halfway to the top line.

On the sheet: J is for jam. Say it out loud: "j-j-jam". Can you think of two more J words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with J

  • Hook to the right

    A j that hooks right is a reversed j. The tail always curls to the left.

  • j sits on the line

    Lowercase j hangs below the base line. The dot is the only part above the mid line.

  • Forgetting the dot

    Line first, then the dot. Say "and dot" at the end.
