Letter R Worksheet: Trace R and r with Stroke Order (Free PDF)

R is one of the one-armed robots. A stick, a bump and a leg for the capital. The lowercase r is a short stick with half an arch, the smallest one-armed robot. Every row on the sheet starts with a solid letter to copy, followed by faint letters to trace.

How to form the letter R

Down, back up, then just the start of an arch

Capital R (3 strokes)

  1. Start at the top, draw the stick

    Straight down to the base line.

  2. Back to the top for the bump

    Curve out to the right and round to the middle of the stick.

  3. Kick out the leg

    From the bump, slant down to the base line on the right.

Lowercase r (one stroke)

  1. Start at the mid line

    Draw a short stick down to the base line.

  2. Go back up the stick

    Nearly to the mid line.

  3. Curve over and stop

    Start the arch, then stop before it comes down. A short flag, not a whole arch.

On the sheet: R is for rain. Say it out loud: "rrrr-rain", like a robot. Can you think of two more R words?

Common mistakes

What to watch for with R

  • r that turns into n

    The arch on r stops before it comes down. Lift the pencil at the top of the curve.

  • Flag too long

    A long flat line across the top is not an r. Keep the flag short and curved.

  • Capital R's leg from the stick

    The leg starts from the bottom of the bump, not from the stick.
